The no. 1 objection I hear from brick-and-mortar businesses and why it's wrong

I asked him over the weekend why a rural brand ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฏโ€™๐˜ต want to use email to grow their business.
Hereโ€™s what he said:

Itโ€™s honestly a great question and one I hear a lot when talking to prospective clients.

Especially brick-and-mortar businesses.

Hereโ€™s the truth:

When someone walks through your door, thereโ€™s no digital breadcrumb trail showing exactly how the person found you.

Hereโ€™s how I handle this with my clients:

We build an email list.

Now you might be saying, โ€œOk great. I still donโ€™t see how that helps me track my ROI.โ€

Hereโ€™s 3 ways we can narrow down where potential customers are coming from and know where to focus our efforts:

1. ๐–๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ.

For a set period, you can send campaigns to only a part of your customer base and measure the difference in foot traffic or sales. This helps isolate the impact of email marketing.

2. ๐–๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐จ๐๐ข๐œ ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฒ๐ฌ.

Ask things like, โ€œhow did you hear about us?โ€ or โ€œwhat would make you visit our store?โ€.

These provide you with invaluable data, but if you donโ€™t have an email list, you donโ€™t have a (scalable) way to contact people to ask them.

3. ๐–๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ช๐ฎ๐ž ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐œ๐จ๐๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ค๐ž ๐”๐“๐Œ๐ฌ.

This allows you to track which landing page, website, or even social media platform the person on your list came from.

But you have to be able to PUT them somewhere. Otherwise youโ€™re just putting those eyeballs into a leaky bucket.

The reality is, the perfect customer attribution channel doesnโ€™t exist, no matter what the marketing gurus want you to believe.

Instead, what I focus on with my clients is creating a system where we can measure trends and relative performance.

Then, do less of whatโ€™s not working and double-down on what is.

Just keep following the data and eventually youโ€™ll have so much business you wonโ€™t care where itโ€™s coming from.
