There’s a saying I love:

“Everything you believe was either taught or caught.”

I had a literal light bulb moment the first time I heard it — because it explained so much.

When I think about how I grew up, I realize just how many of my beliefs were passed down by good people who were doing the best they could.

People I love deeply. People who shaped me.

My mom and dad didn’t sit me down and say, “Here’s what you need to believe about work, money, or what it means to be strong.”

They didn’t have to. I caught it.

I caught it by watching what they did when things got hard.
I caught it by listening to what they didn’t say out loud.
I caught it through silence, stress, sacrifice, and a sense of pride in doing what needed to be done — no matter the cost.

And for a long time, I didn’t even question it.

Because in agriculture, so many of our beliefs feel like facts.

  • If you're not busy, you're behind.

  • If you're overwhelmed, you just need to push harder.

  • If you're struggling, you don't tell anyone.

  • If it's easy, it's not worth anything.

  • If you rest, you're lazy.

But here’s the thing I’ve learned, both personally and from the incredible people I work with:

Just because you caught a belief doesn’t mean you have to keep it.

Think of it like fishing. Not everything you pull up has to stay in your bucket.

If it’s too small, not useful, or not right for you — you throw it back. You don’t keep something just because it came up first. You try again. You learn. You make a choice.

The same can be true for the mindsets we carry.

You can honor where you came from while also choosing something new.

You can respect the sacrifices of your family while also asking, “Does this still work for me?”

You can build on tradition without being buried by it.

This is the work we do inside AGRIMINDS — together. We unpack the things we've caught, examine what we’ve inherited, and ask the hard but freeing question:

Is this belief mine? Or did I just pick it up along the way?

And when it’s not yours anymore — you don’t shame yourself.
You shift.
You throw it back.

So if you’ve ever felt like something in your life isn’t working — but you’ve been afraid to admit it because “that’s just how it’s always been” — I want you to know something:

You’re not broken.
You’re not behind.
And you’re not betraying anyone by evolving.

You’re allowed to choose what you keep.
And you’re allowed to toss back what no longer fits.

If this stirred something in you, I put together a free resource to help you name the common mindsets agriculture has passed down — and begin choosing what’s right for your life.
